Normally blended with Rotgipfler, the indigenous Zierfandler variety can, given the near-perfect terroir of the “Spiegel” vineyard, be vinified on its own with excellent results. Also known as Spätrot, literally “late red,” due to the tendency of the fruit to turn red near harvest time, Zierfandler is a relatively hardy, albeit rare variety which grows almost exclusively in the Thermenregion.
